The 2.8-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel engine will be retained in the Hilux MHEV, but it will be improved with a 48-volt mild hybrid system.

Toyota has released a mild-hybrid version of the Hilux in the European market following successful prototype testing in Africa. The 2.8-litre, four-cylinder turbodiesel engine has been modified with a 48-volt mild hybrid system to boost fuel economy and driving performance. This configuration, which includes the turbodiesel engine, a tiny electric motor, and a 48-volt battery, is believed to be operated by a 6-speed automatic transmission, though specifics have not been published.

Toyota claims “enhanced on- and off-road performance,” but there is no sacrifice on towing and payload capacity, which remain at 3,500 kg and 1,000 kg, respectively. The mild-hybrid setup’s component location allows for a 700 mm water-wading depth. Toyota previously said that this technology will provide improved torque assistance, smoother start and stop operations, regenerative braking, and up to 10% greater fuel economy than a diesel powertrain.

Toyota’s sophisticated TNGA-F platform, shared with the Land Cruiser 300 and Lexus LX500d, is slated to be used for the next-generation Fortuner and Hilux. Internal combustion engines and hybrid powertrains may both be accommodated on this chassis.
