Winter Car Care Checklist 2026: 9 Checks Before Fog Season, From Tyre Pressure to Battery
- Cold air lowers tyre pressure by about 1 psi per 10 degree F drop (about 5.5 degree C), so recheck pressure every 2 weeks once nights turn cold.
- A healthy battery gives only about 65% of its cranking power at 0 degree C; test any battery over 3 years old before December.
- Aim headlights, replace streaky wipers, and keep glass clean inside to beat fog and dew.
- Cover the car when parked outdoors, but only once it is dry.
Winter is easier on a car than the monsoon, but it brings its own trouble: soft tyres on cold mornings, batteries that give up in the first cold snap, dew on the paint and fog on the glass. This 9-point checklist takes about an hour on a weekend before Diwali travel and fog season. We have marked where an Autofy tool genuinely helps, and where it does not.

1. Tyre pressure: check cold, check often
Air contracts as it cools. Tyre makers such as Firestone and Goodyear estimate that tyres lose about 1 psi for every 10 degree Fahrenheit drop in outside temperature, which is roughly every 5.5 degrees Celsius. A car filled on a warm afternoon can read a few psi low at dawn. Under-inflated tyres wear faster, waste fuel and feel vague in braking.
- Check when the car has been parked for at least three hours, not right after a drive.
- Fill to the pressure on the sticker inside the driver door or in the owner's manual, not the maximum on the tyre wall.
- Do it every two weeks once nights turn cold. A digital auto cut tyre inflator stops at the pressure you set, so you can top up at home in a few minutes.
2. Battery: test it before the first cold snap
Cold slows the chemistry inside a lead acid battery while thick engine oil makes the starter work harder. Battery Tender's winter guide says a fully charged battery delivers only about 65% of its rated cranking power at 0 degrees Celsius, and about 50% at minus 18 degrees. Batteries in their third or fourth year show noticeable capacity loss, so get a free load test at a battery dealer before December.
A rested battery should read about 12.4 to 12.6 volts. If it is weak, charge or replace it. For the morning it lets you down anyway, a jump starter with a built in tyre inflator like the VoltX can start the car without another vehicle, and doubles as a power bank.
3. Headlights and fog: be seen, do not dazzle
Clean the headlamp lenses, check both beams and get them aimed at a service centre, since a badly aimed beam lights up the fog in front of you instead of the road. If your halogens are dim, an LED upgrade such as the Falcon 240W LED headlight is plug and play in many cars. Check your car's bulb type on the product page first, and check local rules on headlight changes.
4. Wipers, washer fluid and glass
- Replace wiper blades that streak or chatter; dusty dew turns into a smear on the first swipe.
- Top up the washer reservoir with a proper washer additive, not detergent.
- Clean the inside of the windscreen. A film of dust and smoke on the glass is what makes it fog up first. Wipe it with a dry 1200 GSM microfiber towel so you do not leave lint.
5. Demisting: use the AC, not the cloth
For fast demisting, switch on the AC with the fan on the windscreen setting and fresh air mode. The AC dries the air, so the glass clears faster than with the heater alone. Wiping fog with your hand while driving leaves greasy streaks that glare at night.
6. Cabin air filter and vents
Post-monsoon, cabin filters are often clogged and musty. Replace it if it is dark or damp. Blow dust out of the vents and seat gaps with a cordless air duster and vacuum, and keep the cabin smelling fresh through closed-window months with a long lasting car perfume.
7. Coolant, oil and belts
Check the coolant level and that it is a proper coolant mix, not plain water. If your oil change is due within a month, do it before winter. Listen for a squealing belt on cold starts; that is a sign it needs adjusting or replacing.
8. Paint: dew, dust and bird droppings
Winter nights in north India bring heavy dew that mixes with dust and pollution. Parked outdoors, a car gets a gritty film every morning. A fitted cover keeps that off the paint. Put it on a dry, clean car and fasten the belts so it does not flap and scuff the paint.
9. The emergency kit
Keep a tyre inflator, jump starter, torch, first aid kit, reflective triangle, a microfiber cloth and a spare phone cable in the boot. Fog season and long Diwali drives are when you are most likely to need them.
