|---|---|---|
| Delhi | 102.12 | 95.20 |
| Mumbai | 111.21 | 97.83 |

Why prices are where they are: the 2026 oil shock
Retail petrol and diesel were held flat for about four years until May 2026. A West Asia conflict then pushed Brent crude above USD 100 a barrel, and oil companies raised pump prices four times between 15 and 25 May. Prices have not changed since 25 May.
On 4 November Brent futures were around USD 103.2 a barrel, down 0.4% on the day and near a four week low. Markets are watching the Iran and US talks, Qatar's mediation and the US midterm outcome. The government says oil companies absorbed heavy losses, and in July Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said a cut was not justified. There is no official word on a revision, up or down.
CNG price today in Delhi and Mumbai
CNG has moved more than petrol. IGL raised Delhi CNG by Rs 3.89 a kg on 29 August to Rs 86.98, citing costly LNG. MGL raised Mumbai CNG by Rs 2 on 1 September to Rs 88. We did not find a later revision for either city, but city gas rates can change with little notice, so check your CNG station or the IGL and MGL websites.
| City | CNG (Rs/kg) | Distributor | Latest verified change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Delhi | 86.98 | IGL | Rs 3.89 hike on 29 Aug 2026 |
| Mumbai | 88.00 | MGL | Rs 2 hike on 1 Sep 2026 |
Other cities charge more. HDFC Sky's July tracker, for example, listed Gurugram at Rs 88.12 and Noida at Rs 91.70 a kg. Those were July figures, so treat them as indicative only.
Fuel cost per km in India: petrol, diesel, CNG and EV
Price per litre only tells half the story. Cost per km is what hits your wallet. The maths is simple: fuel price divided by mileage. We used Delhi prices of 4 November 2026. Mileage figures are claimed or assumed, and real world numbers are usually lower.
| Vehicle (assumed) | Mileage | Fuel price (Delhi) | Cost per km | Per 1,000 km |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Petrol hatchback | 20 km/l (claimed, ARAI style) | Rs 102.12/l | Rs 5.11 | Rs 5,106 |
| Diesel SUV | 15 km/l (assumed) | Rs 95.20/l | Rs 6.35 | Rs 6,347 |
| CNG hatchback | 26 km/kg (assumed claimed) | Rs 86.98/kg | Rs 3.35 | Rs 3,345 |
| Electric car (reference) | 7 km/kWh (assumed) | Rs 8/kWh (assumed home tariff) | Rs 1.14 | Rs 1,143 |
Example: Rs 102.12 divided by 20 km/l gives Rs 5.11 a km. Rs 86.98 divided by 26 km/kg gives Rs 3.35 a km. The electric car line assumes 7 km/kWh and a Rs 8 per unit home tariff, which varies by state. Even so, CNG saves about Rs 1.76 a km over the petrol hatch in this example, which is roughly Rs 1,760 per 1,000 km.
Practical ways to spend less on fuel
- Check tyre pressure every two weeks, cold, as per the sticker on the driver door. Under-inflated tyres add rolling resistance. A pump such as the OPTIMUS 150 PSI tyre inflator (Rs 989) or the Sonic auto cut digital inflator (Rs 999, stops automatically at your set PSI) makes this a two minute job.
- Cut idling in winter fog traffic. Switching off at long red lights or railway crossings saves fuel, though avoid doing it in dense traffic where restarts are risky.
- Keep your battery healthy in cold mornings, since repeated cranking wastes fuel. A VoltX jump starter with inflator (Rs 4,099) gives you a jump starter and inflator in one box.
- Drive smoothly. Gentle throttle, early upshifts and steady speeds on highways help every engine type.
- Dirty glass in winter fog makes you crawl and brake more. A clean 1200 GSM microfiber towel (Rs 379) keeps windscreens clear, and a V50 4K dash cam with GPS (Rs 7,099) records your drive in low visibility.

Fuel is expensive, so a soft tyre should not be quietly costing you. The NEUTRON runs cordless or corded, up to 150 PSI, at Rs 2,099. See the NEUTRON inflator. Honest limitation: like any portable inflator, it is slower than a petrol pump compressor on big SUV tyres, so top up regularly instead of waiting for a flat.
