If you are filling up in early October 2026, the headline is simple: petrol and diesel prices in the big metros have not moved. As on 30 September 2026, petrol costs Rs 102.12 a litre in Delhi and Rs 111.21 in Mumbai, exactly where they have been since the last nationwide revision on 25 May. The real change this season has been CNG, which has gone up twice in Delhi NCR and Mumbai in the past five weeks. Here are the city-wise rates, what changed, and what each fuel really costs you per kilometre.

What is the petrol, diesel and CNG price today in India?

The table below shows retail prices as on 30 September 2026. OMCs (IOCL, BPCL and HPCL) publish prices at 6 am daily, so small differences at your pump are normal. Petrol and diesel figures are cross-checked between Goodreturns and The Core's India Energy Tracker; CNG is listed only where IGL or MGL confirmed the rate.

Jaipur is shown as a range because the two trackers picked up a small overnight change at different times. For Delhi NCR, IGL's current CNG rates are Rs 92.01 per kg in Gurugram and Rs 95.59 per kg in Noida and Ghaziabad.

Did fuel prices change for October 2026?

For petrol and diesel in the metros, no. Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Lucknow show zero change against the rates we reported in mid September. The only movements were local shifts of a few paise to about 50 paise in Jaipur, Pune and Ahmedabad.

CNG is a different story:

  • Delhi NCR, 29 August: IGL raised CNG by Rs 3.89 per kg, taking Delhi from Rs 83.09 to Rs 86.98. IGL blamed high international LNG prices.
  • Mumbai, 1 September: MGL raised CNG by Rs 2 per kg to Rs 88, saying it now has to buy more costly spot RLNG to meet rising demand.
  • Earlier in 2026: IGL had already raised Delhi CNG by Rs 6 per kg across three steps in May, alongside the petrol and diesel hikes.

Why are petrol and diesel prices so high in 2026?

Retail prices were frozen for four years until May 2026. Then the West Asia conflict pushed Brent crude above $100 a barrel, and OMCs raised petrol and diesel four times between 15 and 25 May. In Delhi, petrol went from Rs 94.77 to Rs 102.12 (up Rs 7.35) and diesel from Rs 87.67 to Rs 95.20 (up Rs 7.53).

The government says India's increase was far smaller than elsewhere and OMCs absorbed heavy losses; critics note prices did not fall when crude cooled over the summer. Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said in July that a cut was not justified while OMC under-recoveries stood at about Rs 2.18 lakh crore. There is no official word on a revision for October, so plan your budget on current rates.

Petrol vs CNG vs diesel vs EV: what does it cost to run a hatchback?

Here is the cost of driving 1,000 km in Delhi. Our assumptions for a typical hatchback in real city and highway mixed use: petrol 18 km per litre, CNG 25 km per kg, diesel 22 km per litre and an electric hatchback at 7 km per kWh on home charging at Rs 8 per unit. Your figures will vary with traffic, driving style and tariff.

Even after this season's hikes, CNG still saves about Rs 2,200 for every 1,000 km compared with petrol in Delhi. In Mumbai the gap is wider, because petrol is Rs 111.21: about Rs 6,180 per 1,000 km on petrol against Rs 3,520 on CNG.

How can you cut your fuel bill this month?

  • Keep tyres at the right pressure. Under-inflated tyres add rolling resistance and quietly cost mileage. Check once a week when the tyres are cold, using the figure on the driver's door sticker. A 150 PSI tyre inflator in the boot makes this a two-minute job at home.
  • Go easy on the AC. In city traffic, set a moderate temperature and use recirculation once the cabin cools. On the highway above about 60 km/h, the AC is usually more efficient than open windows.
  • Stop idling. If you are stuck for more than a minute at a long signal or waiting outside a school, switch off. Idling burns fuel for zero kilometres. Use the wait to wipe the dash with a wax-infused duster instead.
  • Drive smoothly. Gentle acceleration, early upshifts and steady speeds make a bigger difference than any additive.

For accurate readings, a digital tyre inflator with auto cut stops at the pressure you set, so you do not overfill. If you want a bigger screen and faster fill for SUVs, look at the AIR+ hybrid display inflator. A long road trip is also safer with a jump starter that doubles as a tyre inflator, especially for CNG cars that sit unused for a few days.

★ Autofy verdict
October starts with no relief and no new pain at the petrol pump: metro petrol and diesel rates are exactly where they have been since late May. CNG has lost some of its edge after two rounds of hikes, but it is still the cheapest liquid or gas fuel to run by a clear margin. If you drive 1,000 km or more a month, CNG or an EV makes the most sense; for everyone else, the quickest saving is simply keeping your tyres at the right pressure.
