Mercedes acquired British axial-flux motor specialist YASA in 2021, and the new AMG GT is the brand's first production car to use them. Compared to the permanent magnet synchronous motors found in most EVs, axial-flux motors are smaller, lighter, more power-dense, and capable of repeated high-performance output in quick succession.
Think of it this way: a conventional EV motor is shaped like a cylinder the magnetic flux runs around the outside. An axial-flux motor is shaped like a flat disc the flux runs through the flat face.
