Engine and specs: 349cc, not 398cc
The headline number causes confusion, so here it is plainly: the Bonneville 400 uses a 349cc liquid-cooled, single-cylinder DOHC engine, not the older 398cc unit. It makes 29 PS at 7,000 rpm and 31 Nm at 5,500 rpm, paired with a six-speed gearbox and an assist and slipper clutch. Triumph has done the same with the Speed 400, shortening the stroke to bring it to 349cc so it falls in the lower GST slab for bikes up to 350cc.
- Engine: 349cc, liquid-cooled single, 29 PS and 31 Nm
- Gearbox: 6-speed, assist and slipper clutch, ride-by-wire
- Kerb weight: 195 kg; fuel tank: 14 litres
- Seat height: 790 mm, with an optional 770 mm low seat
- Wheels: 18 inch front, 17 inch rear, wire spokes; 100/90 and 150/70 tyres
- Brakes: 310 mm front disc, 255 mm rear disc, ByBre callipers
The styling is pure Bonneville: rounded tank, flat bench seat, twin rear shocks, wire-spoke wheels and chrome or blacked out engine covers. Launch colourways listed include Aegean Blue with Fusion White and Fusion White with Phantom Black, with more shades on the T40 and an all black T40 Black.
Bookings and deliveries
If you want the bike for the coming riding season, the T40 is the one that arrives first. T4 buyers face a wait of about three months.
Bonneville 400 vs Classic 350, CB350 and Speed 400
Priced from Rs 2.55 lakh, the Bonneville sits clearly above the 350cc retro crowd and above its own sibling, the Speed 400. Here is how the numbers line up.
| Spec | Bonneville 400 (T4) | RE Classic 350 | Honda CB350 | Triumph Speed 400 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Starting ex-showroom | Rs 2,54,999 | Rs 1,88,934 | Rs 1,95,200 | Rs 2,35,484 |
| Engine | 349cc, liquid-cooled | 349cc, air-oil cooled | 348.36cc, air-cooled | 349cc, liquid-cooled |
| Power | 29 PS | 20.2 PS | 21.1 PS | 37 PS |
| Torque | 31 Nm | 27 Nm | 29.4 to 30 Nm | 32 Nm |
| Kerb weight | 195 kg | 195 kg | 181 to 186 kg | 179 kg |
The Bonneville carries a premium of roughly Rs 66,000 over a base Classic 350, and it weighs exactly the same 195 kg. What that money buys is about 44 percent more power, a liquid-cooled engine, a slipper clutch and, on the T40, cornering ABS and cruise control. The Speed 400 is lighter and quicker for less, but it is a roadster, not a classic.
Who should buy it vs the Classic 350
Pick the Bonneville 400 if
- You want a genuine British classic badge with modern electronics
- You ride highways often and value the extra 9 PS and liquid cooling
- Cruise control and cornering ABS matter to you (T40)
Stick with the Classic 350 if
- Budget is the priority: it saves you about Rs 66,000 ex-showroom
- You want the familiar thump and the wider service network
- Most of your riding is relaxed city and touring pace

Make your new retro ride-ready
The T40's 4 inch round TFT and the T4's colour display are compact, period-correct units. If you want large maps and Apple CarPlay on the handlebar, a Motoplay 5 inch CarPlay screen is a tidy add-on. Keep a heavy duty helmet lock on the bike so your lid stays secure at cafe stops, and wear a pair of FANTOM riding gloves for grip and protection on longer rides.
Polished tanks and chrome covers show every speck of dust. A quick wipe with a DustMag duster before the ride, followed by a 1200 GSM microfiber towel after washing, keeps the paint swirl-free. If you also own an older commuter on a halogen H4 bulb, the NightHawk 40W H4 LED is an easy brightness upgrade.
