September 2026 threw up a surprise at the top of India's car sales chart. The refreshed Maruti Suzuki Baleno jumped from ninth place in August to No. 1, with 25,392 units dispatched to dealers. The Tata Nexon and Tata Punch were separated by just 123 units for second and third place, and every one of the top 10 models crossed 16,900 units.

The Maruti Suzuki Baleno, with 25,392 units as per wholesale data compiled by AutoPunditz. That is up 93% from 13,173 units in September 2025 and 61% higher than its own August 2026 figure of 15,746.

The reason is simple: the facelifted Baleno went on sale recently and dealers were stocked up for the festive season. Maruti Suzuki itself said the refreshed Baleno sold about 25,000 units in its first month, which matches the AutoPunditz number closely.

How big was the Indian car market in September 2026?

Passenger vehicle wholesales were about 4.58 lakh units (4,57,604 as per AutoPunditz), up roughly 21% year on year. Autoguide India also puts the month at around 4.6 lakh units, up about 21%. Maruti Suzuki alone sold 1,81,838 cars in India, up 37%, followed by Tata Motors (68,810), Mahindra (64,092), Hyundai (57,166) and Kia (32,017).

The top 10 models together sold 1,91,332 units, or about 42% of the whole market. That is 15.5% more than the same 10 models sold in September 2025, and 4.5% more than the August 2026 top 10.

Part of the strong YoY growth comes from a low base. GST rates on small cars were cut from 22 September 2025, and many buyers delayed purchases in the first three weeks of that month. Maruti also credited extra output from its newly commissioned plant.

Hatchbacks: Baleno leads, WagonR and Swift slip month on month

Three hatchbacks made the list. The Baleno's jump is the headline, while the WagonR (18,835) and Swift (17,399) both grew YoY but fell from their strong August numbers. Dzire and Ertiga: the only sedan and the only MPV

The Dzire is still India's best-selling sedan, but at 17,754 units it was 11% down YoY. Reports on Maruti's September numbers noted the Dzire has faced supply constraints. The Ertiga, the only MPV in the list, rose 40% YoY to 16,911 units, though it was 9% lower than in August.

Did Maruti Suzuki dominate the top 10 again?

Yes. Maruti Suzuki had six of the 10 models: Baleno, Fronx, WagonR, Dzire, Swift and Ertiga, which together sold 1,15,573 units, about 60% of the top-10 total. Tata had two (Nexon and Punch), with Hyundai and Mahindra one each. Interestingly, the same 10 nameplates were in the top 10 in September 2025 too, just in a different order.
