- A 1.5 litre four cylinder turbo makes 160 PS and 280 Nm; Suzuki's hybrids go up to about 174 bhp.
- Basic ADAS will be standard across all Suzuki models, including affordable ones, and cars should lose about 100 kg by 2030.
- No India models or launch dates are confirmed, so if you need a car this festive season, buying now is sensible.
Suzuki has shown its hand for the next decade, and Maruti Suzuki buyers in India stand to gain the most. At its Technology Strategy Briefing 2026 in Japan on 25 September 2026, followed by detailed engine specs reported on 28 and 29 September, Suzuki revealed a new 1.2 litre turbo petrol, a 1.5 litre turbo four cylinder, hybrids of up to about 174 bhp, ADAS for every model and a plan to cut about 100 kg from its cars. Here is what each item means for you, and whether you should wait or buy this festive season.
What did Suzuki reveal at its Technology Strategy Briefing 2026?
Suzuki's official release, titled Technology Strategy 2026 for 10 Years Ahead, sets out a target of about 4 million units a year of production in India from fiscal 2030, faster model development and a strong push for compressed biogas (CBG). The engine details came from presentations and displays covered by Rushlane, Autocar India and Times Drive.
- New 1.2 litre turbo petrol (DITC): three cylinders, direct injection, 125 bhp (93 kW) and 230 Nm. Ready for E100 ethanol, CNG and CBG. Autocar India reports it is based on the Z12E with a variable geometry turbo.
- New 1.5 litre turbo petrol: four cylinders, 160 PS (158 bhp, 118 kW) and 280 Nm, also E100, CNG and CBG ready, aimed at bigger, D segment vehicles.
- Hybrids: a 48V hybrid for small cars, a 1.2 litre series hybrid (engine about 82 hp, drive motor about 88 hp), a plug-in REEV Light (about 114 bhp per Rushlane) and a turbo plug-in hybrid of up to about 174 bhp. Autocar India quotes the plug-in total as 177 hp.
- ADAS for all: camera based safety functions such as automatic emergency braking and lane departure prevention as standard across the range, including affordable models.
- Lighter cars: a 100 kg weight reduction target by 2030, with Suzuki studying up to 120 kg.
One caution: some reports describe the 174 bhp figure as a 1.2 litre hybrid. Suzuki's material links it to a turbo plug-in hybrid, and the exact engine and India use are not officially confirmed.

How do the new engines compare with today's Maruti and rival turbos?
Maruti's current line up is built on naturally aspirated engines plus one small turbo. The 1.2 litre Z12E in the Swift makes 81.8 bhp and 112.4 Nm, the 1.5 litre K15C makes 103 hp and 137 to 139 Nm, and the 1.5 strong hybrid in the Grand Vitara makes a combined 115.6 hp. The 2026 Brezza, launched on 24 July at Rs 7.40 lakh to Rs 13.55 lakh ex-showroom, uses a 1.0 litre Boosterjet turbo with 110 hp and 170 Nm.
Rivals have long sold stronger turbos: the Tata Nexon's 1.2 turbo and the Hyundai Venue's 1.0 turbo GDi both make about 118 bhp (170 Nm and 172 Nm), while the Mahindra XUV 3XO's 1.2 TGDi makes about 129 bhp (Autocar India quotes 131 hp) and 230 Nm. The new Suzuki 1.2 turbo matches the Mahindra on torque and beats the Tata and Hyundai on power.
When will these engines come to India?
Suzuki has given no India launch dates for any of these engines. Any timing you see elsewhere is speculation until Maruti confirms.
Why is Suzuki doing this now? The CAFE 3 link
India notified CAFE 3 fuel efficiency norms on 30 September 2026, and they apply from April 2027. Efficient turbos, hybrids, CNG and flex fuel readiness, plus lighter bodies, all help Maruti lower its fleet average. Our CAFE 3 explainer, scheduled on the Autofy blog, breaks down what the rules mean for car prices.

Keep your current Maruti in top shape
If you buy now or keep your present car a few more years, simple care protects resale value. A cordless Storm 2 vacuum handles festive crumbs, and a budget DUSTO wet and dry vacuum is good for spills on fabric seats.
- Correct tyre pressure helps mileage more than most people think, so keep an AirBit dual power tyre inflator in the boot.
- Older Marutis with wired Android Auto or CarPlay can go wireless with a K1 wireless CarPlay adapter.
- Halogen lamps on base variants? A Falcon LED headlight upgrade brightens night drives.
- XL6 owners parking outdoors can protect paint with a waterproof CARIZMA XL6 cover.
