Mahindra Thar Electric Spied for the First Time: Vision T Design, Expected Range, Launch and Should You Wait
- The Mahindra Thar Electric was spied testing for the first time on 4 October 2026, in a 5-door body based on the Vision T concept.
- Officially confirmed: Thar.e concept (Aug 2023), Vision T concept on the NU_IQ platform (Aug 2025) and NU_IQ rollout from 2027.
- Battery, range and price are not officially confirmed; launch is expected in 2028 or later.
- Need a car now? Buy the ICE Thar (Rs 10.32 to 18.99 lakh) or a current EV like the BE 6 or Harrier.ev.
The electric Thar has finally left the concept stage and hit public roads. On 4 October 2026, Rushlane published the first spy shots of a camouflaged Mahindra Thar Electric test mule, and it looks a lot like the Vision T concept from August 2025. Here is what the pictures show, what Mahindra has actually said, what is still guesswork, and whether you should wait for it.
We covered the petrol and diesel Thar facelift that launched on 22 September 2026 separately. This story is only about the electric Thar.
What do the Mahindra Thar Electric spy shots show?
Based on the spy shots reported by Rushlane, the test mule was caught on public roads (the exact location was not disclosed). It is heavily wrapped, but the shape is easy to read:
Exterior: Vision T design cues
- A five-door body with a flat roof, upright windscreen and a boxy, Thar-style stance.
- A two-level vertical slat grille, squared-off LED headlamps and a flat, clamshell-style bonnet, all straight from the Vision T concept.
- Pronounced wheel arches, large rectangular mirrors and flat side steps under the doors.
- Big wheels, estimated by Rushlane at 19 or 20 inches.
- A broad, upright tailgate without an external spare wheel, temporary tail lamps and a high-mounted stop lamp.
- Signs of independent rear suspension, a big change from the current Thar's ladder-frame setup.
Interior: what can we see?
Most of the dashboard is covered, but the spy shots show an illuminated digital instrument display and chunky grab handles near the A-pillars, a classic off-roader touch. A portrait-style touchscreen like the Vision T concept is possible, but that is not confirmed by the pictures.
Thar.e vs Vision T: what has Mahindra officially said?
It helps to separate the two concepts. The Thar.e was revealed in Cape Town, South Africa on 15 August 2023 on the INGLO-P1 electric skateboard, with Mahindra quoting a wheelbase range of 2,775 mm to 2,975 mm. Two years later, on 15 August 2025 at the Freedom NU event in Mumbai, Mahindra showed the Vision T, a more production-ready evolution, alongside Vision S, Vision SXT and Vision X. All four sit on the new NU_IQ platform.
| Topic | Officially confirmed by Mahindra | Reported, not officially confirmed |
|---|---|---|
| Concepts | Thar.e (15 Aug 2023, Cape Town); Vision T (15 Aug 2025, Mumbai) | That the spied car is the production Vision T / Thar Electric |
| Platform | Thar.e on INGLO-P1; Vision T on NU_IQ, a modular multi-energy platform for LHD and RHD markets | Exact platform of the test mule |
| Body | Vision T shown as a 5-door, 5-seat SUV | Independent rear suspension, 19 or 20 inch wheels (from spy shots) |
| Battery and range | Not announced | Dual-motor AWD expected; no verified battery or range figure |
| Price | Not announced | Some reports guess around Rs 20 lakh for an EV version |
| Launch | NU_IQ products to roll out from 2027 | Thar Electric launch in 2028 or later (Rushlane) |
Thar Electric expected range, battery and price
Here is where we must be careful. The company has not officially confirmed this information. The 2023 Thar.e concept was linked to BYD LFP cells and a dual-motor 4x4 layout, and some reports put the Vision T EV at around Rs 20 lakh, but none of this comes from Mahindra for the production car. Our best guide is Mahindra's current EVs on the INGLO platform, which use 59 to 79 kWh packs with claimed ranges of 542 to 683 km (MIDC). A boxy, off-road-focused Thar Electric with big wheels and AWD would likely sit below those numbers, but treat that as an educated estimate only.
Electric SUVs you can buy today instead
If you need a car in the next year, the Thar Electric is not an option yet. Here is how the current Thar and the main electric SUVs stack up, with verified ex-showroom prices.
| Model | Ex-showroom price | Battery | Claimed range |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mahindra Thar (ICE, 2026 facelift) | Rs 10.32 to 18.99 lakh | Petrol / diesel | Not applicable |
| Mahindra BE 6 Sporteq | Rs 19.45 to 26.95 lakh | 59 / 70 / 79 kWh | 548 to 683 km (MIDC) |
| Mahindra XEV 9e | Rs 21.90 to 31.25 lakh | 59 / 79 kWh | 542 to 656 km (MIDC) |
| Tata Harrier.ev | Rs 21.79 to 30.54 lakh | 65 / 75 kWh (AWD option) | 538 to 627 km (MIDC) |
| Tata Curvv.ev | From Rs 17.19 lakh | 55 kWh | 502 km (MIDC) |
| Maruti Suzuki e Vitara | Rs 16.19 to 20.21 lakh | 49 / 61 kWh | 440 to 543 km |
| Mahindra Thar Electric | Not announced | Not announced | Not announced |
Only the Harrier.ev currently offers dual-motor AWD among these, which matters if you wanted a Thar for light off-roading. None of them is a true body-on-frame off-roader.
Should you wait for the Mahindra Thar Electric?
Public road testing has only just started, and Mahindra itself says NU_IQ products start from 2027. A realistic Thar Electric launch is 2028 or later. If you want a Thar now, the facelifted ICE Thar is on sale. If you want an EV now, the BE 6, XEV 9e, Harrier.ev, Curvv.ev and e Vitara are proven options with 500 km plus claimed range.
Whatever you drive, a few basics make ownership easier. Thar owners who park outdoors should look at a fitted car cover (more below). Keep a VoltX jump starter and tyre inflator in the boot for a dead 12V battery, which every car, EV or not, has. A V12 2K dash camera is worth it on highway trips and an OPTIMUS tyre inflator handles quick top-ups before long drives. Off-road trails mean dusty cabins, so a Storm 3 V2.0 wireless car vacuum helps, while a MISTIQUE car perfume keeps the cabin fresh. If your car has wired CarPlay, a K713A wireless CarPlay box cuts the cable clutter.
