Maharashtra HSRP Rule 2026: New Number Plate Now Mandatory, Rs 1,000 Fine

If your car, bike or scooter in Maharashtra was registered before 1 April 2019, it now legally needs a High Security Registration Plate (HSRP). The deadline to fit one was 30 June 2026, and from 1 July 2026 the transport department began enforcement drives with fines of up to Rs 1,000 for vehicles still running the old plates. What is an HSRP and why is it mandatory?

The High Security Registration Plate was made mandatory for new vehicles across India by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways back in 2019. • Choose Maharashtra as the state and enter your vehicle registration number and mobile number.
• Enter the last five digits of your engine and chassis numbers and verify with the Vahan database.
• Pick a nearby fitment centre or a doorstep appointment, choose a slot and pay the fixed fee online.
• Carry your registration certificate (RC) proof to the appointment; keep the booking receipt until the plate is fitted.

Is the HSRP rule fair? Both sides

Supporters point out that standard, tamper-proof plates genuinely help police trace stolen vehicles, reduce fake number plates and clean up records, and that a one-time cost of a few hundred rupees is small next to those benefits. Critics counter that owners are paying again for something that should have been handled at registration, that the booking portal has seen glitches and slot shortages near deadlines, and that Maharashtra's fitment charges are higher than in some other states. Both points are reasonable; the practical takeaway is simply that the plate is now the law, so booking early avoids both the fine and the last-minute rush.
