Engine and chassis
Both bikes share a 293.5cc single-cylinder engine with air and oil cooling. Honda has not yet confirmed Indian-spec outputs. In international markets this engine makes about 24.3 bhp and 26.5 Nm, so treat those numbers as indicative, not official for India.
- 21-inch front and 18-inch rear wire-spoke wheels, the classic off-road size combination
- Long-travel telescopic fork and a gas-charged Pro-Link rear monoshock
- Dual-channel ABS with a switchable rear for off-road riding
- Honda Selectable Torque Control for slippery surfaces
Final seat height and kerb weight for Indian bikes were not disclosed at launch, which matters for shorter riders. Ask for a test ride before booking.
XR300L vs XR300 Rally: what the extra Rs 25,000 buys
| Feature | XR300L | XR300 Rally |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Rs 1.83 lakh | Rs 2.08 lakh |
| Fuel tank | 7.8 litres | 13 litres |
| Instruments | Basic display | 5-inch TFT with Honda RoadSync |
| Navigation | No | Turn-by-turn via RoadSync |
| Wind protection | High front mudguard, slim body | Taller windscreen, rally bodywork |
| Knuckle guards | No | Yes |
The Rally's 13-litre tank is the real highway upgrade, adding 5.2 litres over the XR300L. If you buy the XR300L and still want navigation, a handlebar Motoplay bike CarPlay screen gives you Google Maps through wireless Android Auto or Apple CarPlay.
XR300L vs Hero Xpulse 210 vs Kawasaki KLX230
| Spec | Hero Xpulse 210 | Honda XR300L | Kawasaki KLX230 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price (ex-showroom) | Rs 1.68 to 1.77 lakh | Rs 1.83 lakh | Rs 2.19 lakh |
| Engine | 210cc | 293.5cc | 233cc |
| Front / rear wheel | 21 / 18 in | 21 / 18 in | 21 / 18 in |
| Brand network | Very wide Hero network | Honda BigWing only | Kawasaki dealers |
On paper the XR300L offers the biggest engine for less money than the KLX230. The Xpulse 210 remains cheaper and has a far larger service network, which counts if you ride in smaller towns. The XR300L's advantage is Honda's reputation for reliability and that extra displacement for highway runs.
Gear up before your first trail ride
Dual-sport riding means rain, mud and parking in odd places. A 100 percent waterproof Hydra bike cover protects the bike at camps, and FANTOM riding gloves with knuckle protection are a basic must off-road.
Lock your helmet to the bike with a heavy-duty 4-digit helmet lock and add a steel wire cable lock for luggage. For night rides, check whether your bike's headlamp uses an H4 bulb before fitting an LED like the NightHawk 40W; XR300 headlamp fitment was not confirmed at launch.
