If you drive a lot in the city, a factory fitted CNG car is still the cheapest way to run a car that is not electric. With Delhi CNG at Rs 86.98 per kg, the most efficient CNG cars on sale cost less than Rs 2.50 per km in fuel on claimed figures, less than half of a typical petrol car. Here are the 6 CNG cars with the best claimed mileage in India right now, ranked, with the real per km cost worked out.
This list is CNG only. For petrol options, see our best mileage petrol cars guide.
Which CNG car gives the best mileage in India?
The Maruti Suzuki Dzire CNG AMT leads with a claimed 36.47 km/kg, according to MotorOctane's 10 October 2026 ranking. It is followed closely by the Swift CNG AMT at 35.34 km/kg and the Baleno CNG AMT at 34.47 km/kg. All three use 1.2 litre petrol engines with a factory fitted 55 litre (water equivalent) tank mounted in the boot.
Interestingly, the automatic versions beat the manuals here. Maruti added an AMT to the Swift, Dzire and Baleno CNG around 18 September 2026, and the claimed figures for the manuals are lower: 33.73 km/kg for the Dzire and 32.85 km/kg for the Swift, with the Baleno manual listed by CarWale at 33.61 km/kg.
| Rank and car | Claimed CNG mileage | CNG price range (ex-showroom) | CNG tank | Gearbox on CNG |

How much does it cost per km to run a CNG car?
We used the Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) Delhi price of Rs 86.98 per kg, in force since 29 August 2026 and still unchanged on 17 October 2026 according to Goodreturns. Divide that by the claimed mileage and you get the fuel cost per km. For comparison, petrol in Delhi was Rs 102.12 per litre on 7 October 2026, as reported by The Hans India.
On claimed numbers, the Dzire CNG costs about Rs 2.38 per km. Even if real world mileage is 25 percent lower, which is common in stop and go traffic with the AC on, it works out to roughly Rs 3.18 per km. A petrol car doing 15 km/l in the same traffic costs about Rs 6.81 per km.
| Car | Rs per km (claimed) | Rs per 1,000 km (claimed) | Rs per 1,000 km (real world, 25% lower mileage) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maruti Dzire CNG AMT | Rs 2.38 | Rs 2,385 | Rs 3,180 |
| Maruti Swift CNG AMT | Rs 2.46 | Rs 2,461 | Rs 3,282 |
| Maruti Baleno CNG AMT | Rs 2.52 | Rs 2,523 | Rs 3,364 |
| Tata Tiago CNG | Rs 3.10 | Rs 3,100 | Rs 4,133 |
| Maruti Victoris CNG | Rs 3.22 | Rs 3,219 | Rs 4,292 |
| Maruti Grand Vitara CNG | Rs 3.27 | Rs 3,270 | Rs 4,360 |
| Petrol car at 20 km/l | Rs 5.11 | Rs 5,106 | Rs 6,808 (at 15 km/l) |
Is a CNG car worth it if I drive 1,000 km a month?
Yes, for most city users. At 1,000 km a month, a Dzire CNG saves about Rs 2,700 a month over a 20 km/l petrol car on claimed figures, and the gap widens in heavy traffic. That is over Rs 30,000 a year, which can recover the extra price of the CNG variant in a few years, depending on how big the premium is. If you drive less than 500 km a month, the case is weaker.

Mileage on CNG drops quickly when tyres run soft, because CNG cars carry a heavy tank. A digital auto cut tyre inflator lets you set the door sticker pressure and stops on its own, so a quick weekly top up becomes a habit.
Best CNG hatchback and sedan: Dzire vs Swift vs Baleno vs Tiago
Maruti Dzire CNG: the mileage king
The Dzire gives the lowest running cost on this list and a proper sedan boot, though the CNG tank takes up much of it. The CNG AMT was launched at a festive price of Rs 8.53 lakh ex-showroom, making it one of the cheapest automatic CNG sedans.
Maruti Swift CNG: the fun one
The Swift CNG AMT starts at Rs 7.92 lakh ex-showroom and returns a claimed 35.34 km/kg. It is the pick if you want a compact hatch that is easy to park.
Maruti Baleno CNG: the roomy hatch
The Baleno CNG AMT costs Rs 8.32 lakh (Delta) and Rs 9.32 lakh (Zeta) ex-showroom, with 34.47 km/kg claimed. It offers more rear seat space than the Swift. CNG cars spend long hours in city traffic, so a wax infused car duster is a quick way to keep road dust off the paint between washes.
Tata Tiago CNG: the cheapest entry and a usable boot
The Tiago CNG is the most affordable car here, from Rs 5.87 lakh ex-showroom per CarWale, and its 60 litre twin cylinder layout sits under the boot floor, so you keep usable luggage space. Its claimed mileage of up to 28.06 km/kg is lower than the Marutis, which pushes the running cost to about Rs 3.10 per km.
Best CNG SUV for mileage: Victoris vs Grand Vitara
If you want an SUV, the Maruti Victoris CNG leads with 27.02 km/kg and an underbody 55 litre tank that keeps the boot free, a big plus for family trips. CNG variants are priced from Rs 11.55 lakh to Rs 14.82 lakh ex-showroom per CarWale. The Grand Vitara CNG claims 26.6 km/kg and costs Rs 13.00 lakh to Rs 14.60 lakh, but its tank sits in the boot.
For Grand Vitara owners who park outdoors, the RINO car cover and perfume combo for the Grand Vitara protects the paint through the dusty winter months.
New entry: Mahindra launched the XUV 3XO CNG on 15 October 2026 at Rs 9.99 lakh to Rs 12.27 lakh ex-showroom. Its claimed 24.7 km/kg (about Rs 3.52 per km at Delhi CNG prices) is below the Grand Vitara's 26.6 km/kg, so it misses this top six, but its twin cylinders sit under the boot floor and leave a flat 270 litre boot.
What about hybrids? A quick note on the Duster hybrid
If you do not want to deal with CNG queues or a smaller boot, strong hybrids are the alternative. Renault launched the Duster E-Tech 160 strong hybrid on 17 October 2026 at Rs 16.99 lakh to Rs 19.49 lakh ex-showroom, with an ARAI certified 29 km/l. At Rs 102.12 per litre, 29 km/l works out to about Rs 3.52 per km, still more than the best CNG cars, and the hybrid costs far more to buy.

CNG cars are usually high mileage city runners, so cabins get dusty and musty fast. A cordless car vacuum with air blower handles floor mats in minutes, and a hanging car perfume keeps the cabin fresh on long commutes.
