- Best overall under Rs 15 lakh: Tata Nexon EV Creative 45 (Rs 14.34 lakh ex-showroom, 489 km claimed, 5 star Bharat NCAP).
- Best value family EV: Tata Punch EV 40 kWh from Rs 10.89 lakh, 468 km claimed, about 304 km real world (Autocar India).
- Cheapest EV: Tata Tiago EV from Rs 6.99 lakh; MG Comet EV from Rs 7.80 lakh is a city only second car.
- Running cost on home power is about Rs 0.9 to 1.3 per km versus roughly Rs 6.8 for a petrol car.
- MG Windsor makes the cut only in its Excite 38 kWh trim at Rs 14.70 lakh.
Electric cars under Rs 15 lakh are no longer a compromise. In October 2026 you can pick from a Rs 6.99 lakh city hatch, a 468 km micro SUV, a roomy crossover and a five star rated compact SUV, all before you cross the Rs 15 lakh ex-showroom mark. We checked every price, battery, range and charging figure so you do not have to.
All prices below are ex-showroom, outright purchase (battery included), as of October 2026. Battery rental (BaaS) prices are listed separately in their own section, because they look much cheaper on paper but add a per km fee. We explained how that works in our 9 October Tata EV battery rental explainer, so here we only show the numbers.
Which electric cars can you buy under Rs 15 lakh in India right now?
| Car | Battery options | Ex-showroom price (outright) | Variants under Rs 15 lakh |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tata Tiago EV | 19.2 / 24 kWh | Rs 6.99 to 9.99 lakh | All |
| MG Comet EV | 17.3 kWh | Rs 7.80 to 10.07 lakh | All |
| Tata Punch EV | 30 / 40 kWh | Rs 9.69 to 12.59 lakh | All |
| Citroen eC3X | 29.2 kWh | Rs 11.99 to 13.26 lakh | All |
| Tata Nexon EV | 30 / 45 kWh | Rs 12.49 to 17.89 lakh | Creative+ MR, Fearless MR, Creative 45 |
| Mahindra XUV 3XO EV | 39.4 kWh | Rs 13.89 to 14.96 lakh | All (AX5, AX7L) |
| MG Windsor EV | 38 / 52.9 kWh | Rs 14.70 to 19.00 lakh | Excite 38 only |
The Windsor qualifies only in its Excite 38 kWh trim after the July 2026 price hike, while the Nexon EV Creative 45 at Rs 14.34 lakh is its sweet spot. Hyundai's small EV and the Tata Aeris EV are still upcoming.
What do BaaS (battery rental) prices look like?
- Tata Tiago EV: from Rs 4.69 lakh plus Rs 2.6 per km
- MG Comet EV: from Rs 4.99 lakh plus Rs 3.2 per km
- Tata Punch EV: from Rs 6.49 lakh plus Rs 2.6 per km
- Tata Nexon EV: from Rs 8.99 lakh plus Rs 4.4 per km
- MG Windsor EV: from Rs 9.99 lakh plus Rs 3.99 per km (38 kWh)
BaaS prices are ex-showroom, October 2026. On BaaS, your real running cost is the rental plus electricity, which lands roughly between Rs 3.5 and Rs 5.7 per km. That is still cheaper than petrol, but far less dramatic than the outright figures below.
Which EV under 15 lakh has the best range and fastest charging?
| Car (variant tested here) | Battery | Claimed range | DC fast charge | Safety rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tiago EV 24 | 24 kWh | 285 km (MIDC) | 10 to 80% in about 35 min | No Bharat NCAP test of the EV yet |
| Comet EV | 17.3 kWh | 230 km | No DC; 7.4 kW AC 0 to 100% about 3.5 h | No Bharat NCAP rating yet |
| Punch EV 40 | 40 kWh | 468 km (MIDC) | 20 to 80% in 26 min (65 kW) | 5 star BNCAP (2024, pre facelift) |
| eC3X | 29.2 kWh | 325 km (MIDC) | 10 to 80% in 57 min | Not rated yet |
| Nexon EV MR | 30 kWh | 275 km (MIDC) | 10 to 80% in 56 min (50 kW) | 5 star BNCAP (2024) |
| Nexon EV Creative 45 | 45 kWh | 489 km (MIDC) | 10 to 80% in about 40 min (60 kW) | 5 star BNCAP (2024) |
| XUV 3XO EV | 39.4 kWh | 285 km (Mahindra real world claim) | 0 to 80% in about 50 min (50 kW) | EV not rated yet |
| Windsor EV Excite | 38 kWh | 332 km | 20 to 80% in about 45 min (45 kW) | Not rated by BNCAP yet |
Claimed numbers are lab figures. In Autocar India's real world test of the 2026 Punch EV 40 kWh, it managed 317 km in the city and 291 km on the highway, an average of 304 km, or about 65% of the 468 km claim. It also went from 20 to 80% in 27 minutes on a fast charger, which matches Tata's promise. That 65 to 70% rule of thumb is a sensible way to read every other claim on this page.
How much does an EV cost per km compared with a petrol car?
Here are our assumptions, stated plainly. Home electricity at Rs 8 per kWh. Petrol at Rs 102.12 per litre (Delhi, 7 to 9 October 2026). A comparable petrol hatch or compact SUV doing a realistic 15 km per litre. For the Punch EV we use Autocar India's measured 7.61 km per kWh. For the others we take 70% of the claimed range as an estimate, except the XUV 3XO EV, where Mahindra's 285 km real world claim is used directly. Charging losses and public charger tariffs (often Rs 18 to 25 per kWh) are not included.
Put simply, every EV here costs roughly Rs 1 per km to run on home power against nearly Rs 7 for petrol. Drive 1,000 km a month and that is a saving of around Rs 5,500 to 6,000 a month, or roughly Rs 66,000 to 71,000 a year. A clean cabin matters more when you spend that saved money on long weekend drives, and a cordless Storm 3 vacuum that lives in the boot is an easy habit for EV owners who already charge at home.
Which one should you buy? Car by car
Tata Tiago EV: cheapest way into an EV
From Rs 6.99 lakh, the updated Tiago EV is the lowest entry price here, and the 24 kWh version gives a 285 km claim with DC fast charging. Rear space is tight, so it suits city first time EV buyers with a home charger.
MG Comet EV: the pure city runabout
Tiny footprint, easiest parking in India, and the lowest running cost on our chart. But it seats four, has no DC fast charging and a 230 km claim, so it really needs to be a second car. If your Comet lacks smartphone mirroring in the lower trims, a plug in K713C CarPlay box can add wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on cars that already have wired support.
Tata Punch EV: the best all rounder under Rs 12.6 lakh
The 2026 facelift moved to 30 and 40 kWh packs, a 468 km claim and genuinely quick 65 kW charging. Autocar's 304 km real world average is the most honest number in this segment. The pre facelift car's 5 star Bharat NCAP rating is a good sign, but the facelift has not been separately re tested as far as we could verify.
Tata Nexon EV: most proven, safest bet
The Creative 45 at Rs 14.34 lakh is the one to pick: 45 kWh, 489 km claimed, 5 star Bharat NCAP and the widest Tata service network. Nexon owners who park outdoors will want a fitted Nexon car cover to keep the paint and charging flap clean.
MG Windsor EV Excite: space first
Rs 14.70 lakh buys the most rear seat comfort and cabin space on this list, with a 38 kWh pack and 332 km claim. It has the highest running cost of the EVs in our estimate, and it awaits an official crash test rating.
Citroen eC3X and Mahindra XUV 3XO EV
The eC3X (Rs 11.99 to 13.26 lakh, 29.2 kWh, 325 km MIDC) is comfortable but slow to fast charge. The XUV 3XO EV (Rs 13.89 to 14.96 lakh, 39.4 kWh) is the punchiest SUV here with Level 2 ADAS on the AX7L, but a modest 285 km real world claim.

Range anxiety is also about being prepared. A compact OPTIMUS tyre inflator helps you keep tyres at the right pressure, which quietly protects range, while a Bolt 5 in 1 combines a vacuum and inflator in one cordless unit for owners who want less clutter in a small boot.
