- Cheapest: Renault Triber from Rs 5.80 lakh; the new Triber Turbo (100PS) starts at Rs 7.84 lakh.

A seven-seater is the car many Indian families buy once and keep for a decade, so the festive season is when the question gets serious. Under Rs 15 lakh (ex-showroom starting price), you can pick the Rs 5.80 lakh Renault Triber, the Maruti Ertiga and its Toyota twin the Rumion, the upmarket Kia Carens Clavis and XL6, or the rugged diesel Bolero Neo. Here is how they compare, and which one fits your family.
We have already compared 7-seater SUVs under Rs 20 lakh; this guide stays with budget MPVs and utility vehicles.

Is the Maruti Ertiga still the best all-rounder?
For most families, yes. The Ertiga gets a 1.5-litre petrol with about 100hp, a 5-speed manual or 6-speed torque converter automatic, and a factory CNG option that claims 26.11 km/kg. Since July 2025, six airbags are standard across the range. The third row is usable for adults on shorter trips, and you still get 209 litres of boot space with all seats up.
The catch: the Ertiga has not been crash tested by Bharat NCAP. A Global NCAP test in 2024 of an Africa-spec Ertiga with only two airbags scored just one star for adults, so do not treat six airbags as a guarantee of a strong structure. The CNG tank also eats into boot space.
Toyota Rumion vs Ertiga: is the Toyota worth more?
The Rumion is a rebadged Ertiga with the same engines, mileage and six airbags. It starts at Rs 9.79 lakh, about Rs 89,000 more, and you pay for the Toyota badge and warranty. Check delivery timelines before booking.
Kia Carens Clavis: best third row under Rs 15 lakh?
If adults will often sit in the last row, test the Carens Clavis first. Its 2,780mm wheelbase is longer than the Ertiga's, and reviewers rate its third row as clearly roomier. Boot space with all rows up is 216 litres, and six airbags and ESC are standard.
The catch: the base HTE (Rs 11.39 lakh) is a petrol manual, and ADAS or the turbo DCT push it past Rs 20 lakh. The older Carens scored three stars in Global NCAP's 2024 retest; we found no published rating for the Clavis itself.
Renault Triber and Triber Turbo: how much car for under Rs 9 lakh?
The Triber is India's cheapest seven-seater from Rs 5.80 lakh, and its third row can be removed. On 28 September Renault added the Triber Turbo: a 100PS, 180Nm 1.0 turbo petrol with a 5-speed manual, from Rs 7.84 lakh to Rs 8.99 lakh, claiming 21 kmpl. CVT and CNG versions are expected, not officially confirmed. Read our full Triber Turbo review for driving impressions.
The catch: with all seats up there are just 84 litres of boot, and the third row suits children. It scored four stars under Global NCAP's older 2020 protocol.
A loaded seven-seater needs correct tyre pressure more than a hatchback does, and a digital tyre inflator with auto cut-off lets you top up at home.
Mahindra Bolero Neo and Neo Plus: who should buy them?
The Bolero Neo (Rs 8.99 to 10.79 lakh) is a ladder-frame SUV with a 100hp 1.5 diesel. The nine-seat Neo Plus (Rs 11.39 to 12.49 lakh) gets a 118hp 2.2 diesel. Both are built for bad roads and heavy loads.
The catch: the rear seats are side-facing jump seats, there are only two airbags, and the Bolero Neo scored one star in Global NCAP testing. The Scorpio Classic S (from Rs 13.37 lakh) follows the same formula.
Which 7-seater gives the best mileage?
For the lowest running cost, the CNG Ertiga or Rumion wins at a claimed 26.11 km/kg.
Maruti XL6: is six seats better than seven?
The XL6 (from Rs 11.62 lakh, at Nexa) uses Ertiga mechanicals with two middle-row captain chairs for easier third-row access. Six airbags are standard. Buy it if you rarely carry seven and want a more premium cabin.
What is the best 7-seater for your family's needs?
- Tightest budget, mostly city use: Renault Triber, or the Triber Turbo if you drive on highways.
- Lowest running cost: Maruti Ertiga CNG, or Toyota Rumion CNG if you prefer Toyota.
- Adults in the third row often: Kia Carens Clavis.
- Four adults, premium feel: Maruti XL6 with captain seats.
- Rough roads, rural use, heavy loads: Mahindra Bolero Neo or Neo Plus.
A twisted loop microfibre towel handles spills from the kids' row, and a vent car perfume keeps a full cabin fresh.
