Farewell, Padmini: The Last Kaali-Peeli Premier Cab in Mumbai Is Taken Off The Road

The legendary ‘Kaali Peeli’ cabs will finally gracefully quit Mumbai’s crowded streets, making way for newer models and app-based travel services.

Whether you lived in Mumbai or merely went through, the omnipresent ‘Kaali Peeli’ cabs were undoubtedly a part of your journey. For almost five decades, the ‘Premier Padmini’ cabs, popularly known as ‘Kaali Peeli,’ have been a notable presence in Mumbai.

According to a transportation department announcement, the final Premier Padmini in the traditional black and yellow livery was registered on October 29, 2003. With cabs in the city having a 20-year age restriction, Mumbai will formally wave farewell to Premier Padmini taxis on October 30, 2023.

More than just a taxi, the ‘Kaali Peeli’ was a spectacle in and of itself, first appearing on Indian roads in 1964 and ending in 2000 when production was halted to make room for newer models and app-based ride services. These iconic taxis will now gracefully leave Mumbai’s busy streets, coinciding with the retirement of BEST’s venerable red double-decker diesel buses.

It first appeared in India in 1964 as the Fiat 1100D, manufactured by Premier Automobiles Ltd. The Ambassador had a near-monopoly in the market at the time, leaving Padmini as its only direct competitor. While it was first sold as the Fiat 1100D, the name ‘Premier Padmini’ was given to it in 1974. Interestingly, this renowned automobile was produced at Premier Auto’s Kurla facility in Mumbai, which is why this city has the highest concentration of Premier Padmini models.

It was powered by a four-cylinder petrol engine with 39.45 bhp and 71 Nm of torque, teamed with a four-speed manual transmission and rear-wheel drive. It was notable for having a column-mounted shifter rather than the standard gear lever. Its functionality and striking black-and-yellow color scheme made it an appealing choice for Mumbai taxis.

The BYD Seal was one of the show-stoppers at the Auto Expo earlier this year; a sumptuous, battery-powered sedan that stunned showgoers with its beautiful look and promised range. The business has previously stated that the automobile will be ready for introduction in India by late 2023. However, geopolitical concerns have resulted in strained relations between India and China. This has influenced several critical business choices for Chinese enterprises looking to establish new operations in India.

Initially, Great Wall Motors, a well-known SUV manufacturer, was denied the required permissions to assume management of the closed Chevrolet facility in the vicinity of Pune from General Motors. Ultimately, Hyundai acquired the plant. GWM eventually withdrew from India as a result. In that location, the business had established an office and employed personnel.

While this occurred a few months ago and relations remain bitter, BYD was the most recent victim, since their ambitious desire to establish a mammoth plant in India was recently foiled. Fortunately for BYD India, both of its current models, the e6 MUV and the Atto3 compact SUV, are selling well and keeping the company’s network busy. For those who are unaware, BYD has been serving the commercial vehicle industry in India for over a decade. It finally entered the passenger car market with the E6 last year, followed by the Atto 3 this year.

However, a BYD spokesperson stated that dealers are receiving inquiries from customers interested in the Seal. In its most powerful iteration, the battery-powered vehicle has a 0-100 kmph speed of 3.8 seconds and a range of up to 700 km. The car is available in both single- and dual-motor configurations overseas, with the latter offering all-wheel drive.

According to reports, BYD is aiming for a price of around Rs 50 lakh for the Seal, although this would be impacted by the spec it picks for the Indian market. In the last two years, the luxury automobile category has experienced a flurry of EV releases. While the majority of the activity has occurred in the Rs 1 crore and above category, brands such as Volvo and BMW are now targeting the sub-Rs 1 crore market. With the Seal not being an SUV body shape, which appears to be a safer choice for new releases, the reception to the elegant Kia EV6 must bode well. It wouldn’t be shocking if BYD released another, bigger SUV shortly after the Seal.

Toyota is going to install the NACS ports into selected Toyota and Lexus BEVs to integrate them. Customers who own or lease eligible Toyota and Lexus vehicles that are now equipped with the Combined Charging System (CCS) will be given an adapter to enable NACS charging beginning in 2025.

Customers will have access to a vast charging network, consisting of over 84,000 charging outlets across North America, including both Level 2 and DC fast chargers, through specific Toyota and Lexus mobile applications.

The 2023 Royal Enfield Super Meteor, manufactured in India, has now been officially announced in the United States and Canada, providing aficionados with three unique variations – Astral, Interstellar, and Celestial.

The Royal Enfield Super Meteor 650 in North America is powered by the same 648 cc parallel-twin cylinder engine, which produces 46.3 horsepower at 7,250 rpm and 52.3 Nm of peak torque at 5,650 rpm. This engine is paired with a 6-speed transmission. The front forks are 43 mm Showa Big Piston USD with 120 mm of travel, while the rear shock absorbers are 5-step pre-load adjustable featuring 101 mm of travel.

The BMW i7 M70 xDrive retains its large illuminated grille with vertical slats, split LED headlights with DRLs, flush-fitting door handles, slender LED tail lamps, and dual-tone exterior paint finish on the outside. Then there’s the M emblem on the grille and other M-specific features like side skirts, front side panels, ORVMs, and a rear spoiler; the M70 also rides on 21-inch M light-alloy wheels.

In terms of features, the M70 is similar to the standard i7. It claims to go from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.7 seconds, which is a full second faster than a regular car. The top speed is 250 kilometers per hour. It has a range of 560 km (WLTP) and can be charged from 10% to 80% in 34 minutes using a 195 kW DC fast charger.

The new Triumph Thruxton Final Edition pays homage to the Cafe Racer style with its ‘Competition Green’ color scheme

The Triumph Thruxton Final Edition will be the cafe racer’s final outing. It’s available in a rich metallic paint scheme dubbed “Competition Green.”

The Triumph Thruxton will be phased out in 2024. Having said that, the British company has introduced the Thruxton Final Edition to commemorate the event. The cafe racer’s final hurrah, as the name indicates, will arrive in showrooms in Spring 2024. The Thruxton Final Edition costs £15,095, which amounts to Rs 15.32 lakh. Triumph claims that the Final Edition is a fusion of the Thruxton RS’s design and grace, paying respect to the cafe racer’s racing pedigree. Triumph has saved specific features for the Final Edition in order to separate it from the top-spec RS. One of these is a metallic paint scheme called “Competition Green,” which contrasts with black side panels and mudguards. The artist’s initials are hand-painted in gold accents on the sculpted fuel tank and seat cowl. In addition, each motorbike will come with a one-of-a-kind Final Edition engine emblem with a gold-finished surround and a ‘Final Edition’ graphic infill. The ‘Heritage’ Triumph badge on the tank and the ‘Thruxton Final Edition’ branding receive a similar treatment.

The most special feature, however, is the certificate of authenticity with the bike’s unique VIN (Vehicle Identification Number), which the Thruxton Final Edition will possess. This agreement will be signed by members of the Thruxton 1200 design team as well as Triumph CEO Nick Bloor. However, the Final Edition retains several Thruxton-specific components, like the single bullet seat, Monza-style gasoline filler cap, clip-on handlebars, anodized aluminum swingarm, and so on.

The Triumph motorbike will be marketed through a limited network of Triumph dealers, which will swiftly grow to more than 100 sites this fiscal year. The Scrambler bike is well-known for combining the versatility of a road bike with the off-road capabilities of a dirt bike. It has been built to handle rough terrains and soft trails thanks to its sturdy frame, long travel suspension, high ground clearance, and huge front wheel. Traction control that can be switched on and off, an assist clutch, ride-by-wire, semi-digital instrument control, an immobilizer, a USB-C charging port, and other features are available. The instrument panel comprises a large analog speedometer as well as a tiny LCD display with a digital tachometer, gear position indication, trip information, and a fuel gauge. The Scrambler 400 X now has a wider front mudguard, switchable ABS, a grille to protect the headlamp, and a radiator.

This Rolls Royce Special Edition, inspired by the solar eclipse, features a magnificent starry pattern! Take a peek

Ultra lux car maker hits up day and night in one fell swoop

Rolls-Royce, the British luxury manufacturer, has created the ‘Black Badge Ghost Ekleipsis,’ a limited edition automobile inspired by the solar eclipse. This Rolls-Royce will be available in only 25 copies, each of which depicts light and darkness and illustrates how the Moon obscures the Sun. Interestingly, the release of this limited edition Rolls-Royce corresponds with the yearly solar eclipse, which may be observed in portions of the Western Hemisphere on October 14.

The outside of this limited edition automobile is painted in Lyrical Copper, which represents the light projected by a solar eclipse. When exposed to direct sunlight, this color has a stunning effect. The Pantheon Grille is standard, and the brake calipers are designed in Mandarin to reflect the powerful pulses of sunshine.

A Starlight Headliner with a unique animation within the cabin adds to the aesthetic appeal of the space. This Starlight Headliner depicts the entire eclipse’s progression from start to finish. According to reports, this animation may be visible for seven minutes and 31 seconds.

Rolls-Royce’s illuminated fascia is laser-etched with sparkling stars that represent the chronology of a total eclipse. According to the manufacturer, the size and position of each star were meticulously tweaked by a single designer, ensuring a mesmeric impression.

Notably, the seats in this Rolls Royce were inspired by the solar eclipse, and the exterior is bi-colored and has a special artwork made up of 2,00,000 single holes. Additionally, the seats are covered in Mandarin leather that has a black tone which has been perforated for a striking contrast.

Finishing touches on this special edition automobile include umbrellas with Mandarin braiding hidden behind the coach doors, LED treadplates, and an intriguing indoor motor car carrying the automaker’s wordmark.
